Team Indiana Hearts, OI’s new cardiac team, finished their first mission in Kenya. The team completed a series of complex heart valve replacement surgeries during their week working at the Kenyan hospital, offering patients who had little other options a new lease on life.

Just one example of Team Hearts' impact during their first mission: a 26-year-old patient seen by the team had spent 13 years feeling fatigued and unable to walk more than 10 steps at a time without resting. Just two days after her cardiac surgery, she told team members “I feel better, I feel like I can walk.”
Team Hearts is honored to share their skills and expertise working alongside their Kenyan colleagues to make a lasting impact-one heartbeat at at time. The team consists of an exceptional team of healthcare professions-including cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologist, physician assistants, perfusionists, and registered nurses and is led by Christine Rullo, PA and Dr. Amjad Syed, who joined Operation International in 2025.
